SXSW Interactive is not always about the sessions and technology. Sure that's a large part of why people go, but for some, it's the one to one relationships that are built and started that really make the conference a cut above the rest.
Most recently in my experience at SXSW, the panels were lackluster, and more conversation was being held in the halls and in ad hoc sessions. I met some online contacts that I had never met in person, was able to interview them and gain their perspective on a few things, all the while enjoying some of the surrounding events of Southby to flesh out the experience.
One such experience was the book signing of Chris Brogan for his new book, "Social Media 101" and "Engage" from Brian Solis. Not only did I get a one on one, but I got my books signed by people that I really look up to. These community leaders are not egoists, but rather, look to create a fire amongst their fans to create their own communities based on the passions they have.
So now that I got my reading material, here's a question I have for you. What are you doing to build communities or extend yourself into new online realms? Let me know and while you're at it, how can I help you achieve that?
